Muscat consists of a number of smallish towns. Muscat, the
historical centre, Muttrah, Al Qurm, Ruwi, Madinat al Sultan
Qaboos and Al Seeb. It reminded us of the Costa del Sol, with
it's mountain backdrop, vegetation and villa styled buildings.
Other interesting towns include Nakhl, Al Rustaq, Barka, Ibri,
Nizwa, Sohar, Ibra and Sur.
MIZWA-OASIS
The Oasis city of Nizwa, the largest in the province, was
the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries. A popular
tourist attraction with its historical buildings. The palm
oasis stretches for eight kilometers along the course of two
wadis. It is known for its souq where you can purchase copper
and silver jewellery and other craft items.
BURAMI-OASIS
The oasis town of Buraimi is well worth a visit. It lies
about 350 km northwest of Muscat on the border with the United
Arab Emirates. The town has an old fort and a souq, smelling
of spices and palm products.
SOHAR
The coastal city of Sohar was once an important Islamic
port and the largest town in the country. Visit the souq with
tailors galore, fruit sellers, and fishermen vying for space.
Checkout the fort with its four-story walls and six towers,
overlooking the bay.
SALALAH
The largest city in southern Oman, Sallalah, we've been
told, leaves a lasting impression, with its beautiful fine
sand beaches, coconut groves and banana plantations. We will
make an effort to go during our next visit.
