Take a visit to the Qatar National Museum,
Forts, Handicrafts Centre, traditional souk bazaars and don't forget the Zoo.
NATIONAL MUSEUM
A restored palace on the Doha corniche
has been divided into a museum and an aquarium which spans two levels, with a
large lagoon in the middle of the complex. You can see displays of desert life,
astronomy, Islam, the oil industry and the traditional lifestyle of the Qatari
people. The main section of the old palace has a good collection of jewellery,
coins, manuscripts and Bedu items. Worth a visit.
There are many forts to visit, particularly the old restored fort in the centre
of Doha which displays traditional handicrafts.
CORNICHE
Take a small pleasure boat and cruise the length of the Corniche, which is 7 km
along Doha Bay, or cruise around the Bay in one of the oldest types of sailing
ship, a dhow. For special charters take the Al Bateel, a 125-foot long vessel
built to an ancient design.
THE Doha ZOO
A fifteen minute drive from the centre of Doha, the zoo is laid out in a complex
of mature green parkland. There is a small train that goes round the perimeter
of the animal section.
SOUKS
Want to bargain and haggle? Head for the
plot behind the Corniche to explore Qatar's rambling 'souk city'.
THE OLD SOUK
A chain of tiny shops selling exotic spices, herbs and nuts. Check out the traditional
Arab costumes and fabrics - the ceremonial camel hair women's cloaks, al-bisht,
or the embroidered black headgear, al bukhnoq. Richly embroidered cushions, bed
covers, and exotic blankets
THE NEW SOUK
shopping centres selling jewellery, clothing, fabrics, electrical goods, leather
goods, fashion accessories, and much more. There are some upmarket arcades, like
the Souk Al Dira, where you can find exclusive perfumes, cosmetics and fabrics.
THE DOHA GOLD SOUK
Where gold is sold by the gram, based on carat content, sometimes with a small
amount added to pay for the creative design and craftsmanship. All that glitters!
