When I change the world changes…

The essence of the Brahma Kumaris philosophy is: ‘When I change, the world changes.’ Yet how does this formula actually work? Since I am merely a speck within a vast universe, what difference could I possibly make? To change the world is a humungous task. Where even to begin? So many have tried, and where have we reached? Perhaps we should just leave it to God alone.

Often we find ourselves saying that things are impossible, when really the truth is they’re inconvenient. We are lazy, whether we acknowledge it to ourselves or not. We all want change, but we want it our way, and sometimes life doesn’t unfold that way.

Change is inevitable and most of us know there is only pain endured as a result of resisting change. In fact, whatever situations we find ourselves in, we are in them because there are lessons to be learnt from them. If I resist that learning, it will continue to persist! Very often, I find myself in the same cycles of karma and drama, i.e. the same situation repeating itself with different actors. And I say to myself, hold on a minute, is this a ‘de ja vous’? Asking God to change the situation makes no sense because until I have learned from it and changed, I still need the situation. When I can’t see what I need to change then I end up blaming the mirror – the person or the situation – instead of having a good look at myself. This is not honesty.

To learn, grow and change, I need to take responsibility for myself by becoming more conscious of my choices and values from an honest heart. By being honest it becomes clear to me what I need to change and what I need not change. Honesty is not necessarily about divulging the secrets of my heart or about making open confessions. Honesty is about acknowledging the truth within me and having the courage to follow that truth. The qualities of humility, compassion, tolerance are essential in being honest with the self.

As I become more honest with myself I teach others to be honest also. Then the energy of truth spreads into the atmosphere around us and sends a rippling effect into the universe. The clean and positive energy we emanate leaves no room for negativity and falsehood in its environment. Thus, simply by becoming more honest with my self, even the small speck that I am makes an enormous difference to the world!

Om Shanti
